The method involves specifying a demand parameter (MACC) during activation of an adaptive cruise control or ACC system, depending upon which the engine is controled. In a first or normal ACC state the demand parameter or a derived value (alphai) is limited and the ratio (ige) set depending on the limited demand value or derived value. In a second state the ratio is set depending on the demand value or derived value.
