The method involves specifying a demand parameter (MACC) during activation of an adaptive cruise control or ACC system, depending upon which the engine is controled. In a second state the ratio is set depending on the demand value or derived value. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for setting a transmission ratio in a motor vehicle with a distance and/or speed regulator (adaptive cruise control system).
