The connecting rod has a small (12) and a big end bearing (16) and a stem (14) with a defined cross-sectional course over its bending length IK for attaining a sufficient bending rigidity. The cross-sectional course has a bending rigidity IK/2 which reduces towards both end bearings. Pref. the bending rigidity is reduced to approx. 114 to 318 IK. At the connecting sections to both end bearings, the bending rigidity is again increased. In the region of IK/2 the stem may have an H-shaped cross-section, while in the region of low bending rigidity it may have a I-shaped cross-section.
