In a process for controlling the feed rate of a thermoplastic film strip from a preheating unit for a thermoforming machine a storage loop (9) is formed and loop position is recorded for subsequent control of feed rate. Loop (9) position is recorded either continuously or at set times and the trends in loop movement are constantly calculated by a control unit (15). Feed rate is then controlled according to the trends in loop position to ensure that the loop (9) stays in the same position. A claimed preheating unit includes a measuring unit recording each loop position and a control unit for controlling a drive unit (6) rotating a film feed roll (4).
