A control or calibration standard for measuring equipment for the optical determination of hemoglobin concentration in blood samples comprises scattering bodies dispersed in an aqueous electrolyte. The scattering bodies have a mean diameter of less than 0.6 micro m, preferably 0.3 micro m and are present at a concentration by volume of less than 1%, preferably less than 0.3%.
