Apparatus for measuring the volume of rising dough consists of a container (1) holding a certain quantity of dough, placed on top of a box (2) with an emitter (3) and receiver (4) of an e.g. infrared light beam. The beam is passed from the emitter to the receiver and through the container at a level set by a U-shaped support (6) containing angled mirrors. The box (2) also contains a timer and a signal emitter which is connected to a remote repeater when the apparatus is used inside a cupboard.
