The air cushion step down sleeve (1) for a grinder has a central bore (8) smaller than the diameter of the shaft and an outer diameter larger than the bore in the grindstone. The sleeve is pressed into place to assure centering. The air pressure is selected depending on the operating characteristics of the grinder. The air can be replaced by a liquid feed.
