Oxygen transporter for use in blood substitutes, comprising apoglobin derived from hemoglobin or myoglobin associated with non-heme metallo-porphyrin

New oxygen transporters (I), based on hemoglobin (Hb) or myoglobin (Mb), comprise an apoglobin derived from Hb or Mb having strong affinity for oxygen and associated with a metallo-porphyrin different from heme. An Independent claim is included for a porphyrin exchange method for preparation of Hb or Mb containing a metallo-porphyrin, involving (a) contacting Hb or Mb containing an iron, cobalt, manganese, copper, nickel, chromium or zinc porphyrin with an excess of a metallo-porphyrin, in a solvent at pH 10-12 under anerobic conditions; (b) adding a metal reducing agent; (c) incubating for 10-30 minutes at the elevated pH; (d) neutralizing the reaction medium to pH 6-7; and optionally (e) purifying.
