The reel is designed to accommodate cables with two, or more, insulated cores laid flat in an overall sheath presenting, in cross-section, two, or more, hexagons with a common side, - opt. resembling a dumb-bell. The reel comprises conventional flanges carried on a central hub having two, or more, cylindrical sections of different diameters, alternating with conical transition sections. To facilitate bending at reduced radii or curvature, the over sheath is regularly ''pinched'' or notched. The stepped hub surface allows the cable to be wound on with its cross-section's major axis inclined at 30-45 degrees. to the reel axis, so that the over sheath's external contour, in the first turn, closely follows that of the hub, while each succeeding turn lies closely against its predecessor. The number of steps in the hub corresponds to the number of cores in the flat cable.
