The automatic vending machine has an enclosure (10) housing a series of shelves (13) on which fruit is laid out in a line. A manipulator (40) has a transverse guide for a vertical guide (56) which carries a vertically mobile arm (60), which can grip an individual fruit item and carry it to the delivery outlet. A computer controls operation of the manipulator.
