PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly efficiently decompose an org. halogen compd. and to keep activity for a long time by bringing a catalyst with a porous layer such as silica on the surface of titania particles into contact with a gas flow contg. an org. halogen compd. at least at a predetermined temp. in the presence of steam. ;SOLUTION: A catalyst wherein titania, silica and tungsten oxide are incorporated and silica is about 2-15wt.% of titania and as the atomic ratio of Ti to W, Ti is 20-95 mole % and W is 80-5 mole % and the surface of titania is covered with a porous layer of silica and/or tungsten oxide, is used. A gas flow contg. at most 10vol.% org. halogen compd. is brought into contact with this catalyst at most at 500°C in the presence of steam being at most 30vol.% of the whole gas flow. As a result, the org. halogen compd. is decomposed highly efficiently into carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen halide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
