PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a diagnostic function of fuel metering system and make it possible to diagnose a defect of a high pressure pump as requested.;SOLUTION: As for each high pressure pump a quantity indicating a pressurized characteristic curve of each high pressure pump is monitored and used for a diagnosis of a defect of the high pressure pump. When a difference in quantity monitored by the high pressure pump exceeds at least a specified limit value, the defect of the high pressure pump is concluded.
