PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compounds in good yield in one stage without requiring a trasesterification step by using a carboxylic acid ester of the subject compound, a tris(hydroxymethyl)alkane and hydrogen chloride as raw materials. ;SOLUTION: A mixture of (A) a carboxylic acid ester of a 1,1-bis(chloromethyl)-1-hydroxylmethylalkane (hereinafter abbreviated to BCA) or a 1-chloromethyl-1,1-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkane (hereinafter abbreviated to MCA) with (B) a 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)alkane (hereinafter abbreviated to TMA) is reacted with (C) hydrogen chloride to thereby afford the BCA or MCA. An ester derivative of acetic acid or propionic acid is preferred as the carboxylic acid ester. The ratio of the component A is preferably 0.01-0.6mol based on 1.0mol component B and the ratio of the component C is preferably fed in an amount of 10-10.0mol based on 1.0mol component B.
