PURPOSE: To enable a film having excellent gas barrier properties, high flexing resistance and economical advantages to be formed by providing a thin film mainly composed of aluminum oxide and silicon oxide on at least one of faces of a plastic base material and allowing the specific wt.%, of the aluminum oxide to be contained in the thin film. ;CONSTITUTION: A thin film of aluminum oxide/silicon oxide comprises a mixture of or a compound of aluminum oxide and silicon oxide. It is preferable that the ratio of the aluminum oxide in the thin film is at least 20wt.% and at most 99wt.% and that the thickness of the thin film is 50 to 8,000A in terms of its gas barrier properties and flexibility. Then, when the specific gravity of the thin film is shown as D=0.01A+b (D: the specific gravity of the thin film, A: wt.% of aluminum oxide in the thin film), the structure of the thin film becomes coarse in the case of b1.6, so that gas barrier properties are not sufficiently obtainable. Further, in the case of b2.2, although the initial gas barrier properties after forming the film are excellent, the film becomes too hard and the mechanical characteristics thereof becomes inferior, so that the lowering of the gas barrier properties after treatment becomes greater and it is not suitable for use of the same as a film having gas barrier properties.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
