PURPOSE: To display character data while recognizing on which line the display position is in existence when the operator moves the display position of the caption character data. CONSTITUTION: A masking period setting switch 1d of an operation section 1 is depressed and the operator moves optionally a masking period of a masking period setting means 6 on a screen with an UP switch 1a and a DOWN switch 1b. Furthermore, a masking position setting switch 1c of the operation section 1 is depressed and the operator moves optionally a masking position of a masking position setting means 6 on a screen with the UP switch 1a and the DOWN switch 1b. A character generator 8 generates a character signal on a line of the moving position through the movement and the signal is mixed with the masking signal by a 2nd mixing circuit 13, the generated signal is mixed with the video signal by a 1st mixer circuit 10 and the mixed signal is fed to a video output circuit 11 and displayed on a CRT 12. On the other hand, when characters of caption data are displayed on the CRT 12, a switch SW is switched to extract the caption data from the video signal and the character signal generated by a caption decoder 15 is mixed by the 1st mixing circuit 10.
