PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the uniformity of fineness of a roving package.;SOLUTION: A device for detecting actual diameter of the roving package 28 in a non-contact manner is provided, this device has a laser sensor 34 provided with a transmitter and a receiver for laser radiation 35, 35', and a distance from the laser sensor 34 to a surface of the package is obtained by radiation 35, 35' hitting the surface of the package and returning into the receiver from the transmitter. The laser sensor 34 may be attached to a fixed position of a machine frame 10 or a yarn transfer device 20. The laser sensor may be arranged in a casing having an opening part for passing laser beams 35, 35', and a free space for introducing compressed gas passing through the opening part and going to the outside is provided between the laser sensor 34 and an inner face of the casing.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
