PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Japanese inputting device for allowing any user to easily input Japanese by using a compact keyboard in which the relatively small number of keys are arrayed. SOLUTION: This Japanese inputting device is provided with two input/output modes, that is, a Japanese syllabary turning mode and a consonant + vowel input mode so that it is possible to cope with either the consonant + vowel input mode (S9) in which the necessary number of times of key depression for inputting one consonant is small or the Japanese syllabary turning mode (S8) in which an input procedure is made intuitive and easy to understand according to its application or use condition. Also, the input mode is automatically decided based on the first character input operation pattern after a power source is turned on (S2).
