Method for the enhancement of luminescence intensity from a reaction between adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and a luciferase/luciferin reactant system

Disclosed herein is a method for significantly enhancing the luciferase activity in a chemiluminescence assay technique. The disclosed method involves the use of trehalose, a-D-glucopyranosyl-a-D-glucopyranoside, in a chemiluminescent reactant system. By adding trehalose up to its saturation solubility level, increases in emission intensity of from 25-100%, or greater, can be attained.
