This invention relates to a process for preparing basic organic nitrogen-containing compounds by ;(a) reduction with lithium aluminum hydride, ;(b) hydrolysis of the resultant mixture by addition to an aqueous solution in which substances containing &agr;-hydroxycarboxyl and/or &agr;-aminocarboxyl groups are dissolved, and ;(c) separation of the two resultant phases at a pH of the aqueous phase of from 7 to 12.
