The present invention relates to a mullite composition that is substantially comprised of mullite grains that are essentially chemically bonded with the composition having at least two contiguous regions that have substantially different microstructures. The composition can be produced by forming a mixture of one or more precursor compounds having the elements present in the mullite; shaping the mixture to a green porous form by applying a nucleating controlling agent to a portion of the green porous form and then heating the green porous form under an atmosphere and at a temperature sufficient to form the mullite composition.
