An isolated Staphylococcal ABC transporter protein or a partially modified form of the protein having at least 70% homology therewith, or an immunogenic fragment of the protein for use in a method of treatment or diagnosis of the human or animal body. Also described is a diagnostic test method for Staphylococci, comprising the steps of: (i) reacting a Staphylococcal ABC transporter protein, or an immunogenic fragment of the protein with a sample; ii) detecting an antibody-antigen binding reaction; and iii) correlating detection of the reaction with the presence of Staphylococci.
