A promoter sequence which encodes an isolated DNA molecule comprising the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 and which encodes the promoter region of the myostatin gene, or a fragment thereof, which has been modified by an insertion, substitution or deletion of one or more nucleotides. The preferred embodiment includes a method of diagnosing muscle cell disorders in an animal, including human, using the myostatin gene promoter sequence as defined as a diagnostic probe.
