The invention relates to a method for long-term stable and accurate measurement of the concentrations of constituents of solutions, especially the glucose concentration in aqueous solutions. According to said method, a linear polarized electromagnetic measuring beam is guided by means of total reflection in a prism (1) whose longitudinal sides and narrow side is in contact with the solution to be measured, interacting with the measuring material on the boundary layer. Once the beam exits from the prism (1), it is conducted through an adjustable optical phase adjuster (4) and an analyzer (5) and the light intensity is measured in an appropriate manner, optionally after appropriate amplification. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the measuring beam is dispersed into two partial beams by means of a beam divider (10). One partial beam is conducted through the prism, divided up once it exits from the optical phase adjuster (4) and a ratio or a difference and a sum is formed from the signals of the two partial beams. A ratio is formed from the sum signal and the signal generated from the reference beam which exits from the beam divider (10). The invention also relates to an especially miniaturizable device for carrying out said method.
