The present invention discloses a nucleic acid and promoter therefor that is induced in oxidative stress conditions as a result of the stress signal hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The nucleic acid or promoter when linked to a further nucleic acid, acts as a promoter causing the said further nucleic acid to be similarly induced/expressed. The invention further provides plants generated that comprise the promoter linked to a selected gene whereby induction of the gene is observed during periods of stress such as oxidative stress or as a result of environmental conditions.
