Polyazacycloalkanes immobilized on a silica gel are prepared by reacting a polyazacycloalkane with a substituted silane to give a compound which is then condensed on the silanol sites of a silica gel. Polyazacycloalkanes immobilized on a silica gel are prepared from a polyazacycloalkane of formula (A): R1, R2 = H, 1-15C alkyl, or 7-12C (hetero(aryl))alkyl; W1, W2 and W3 = divalent radical of formula: -((CT1T2)n-(N(R3))p-(CT3T4)m)l (B); p = 1 or 0; l = 1 or 2; n, m = -1 and = 3; T1, T2, T3 and T4 = H, 1-15C alkyl, or 7-12C (hetero(aryl))alkyl, or, better, CT1T2 and/or CT3T4 = -(C=O)-; and R3 = H, 1-15C alkyl, or 7-12C (hetero(aryl))alkyl, provided that the polyazacycloalkane ring in (A) comprises not more than 30 cyclic carbon atoms and not more than 6 cyclic nitrogen atoms. Method for preparation comprises: (a) Reacting (A) with compound of formula: Z-R4-Si(X1)(X2)(X3) (C), in which X1, X2 and X3 = H, halogen or OR5 in which R5 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R4 = 1-10C hydrocarbon chain in which is optionally inserted chains with arylene structures or fragments such as -O-, -S- or -N(R6)-C(=O)-; R6 = H, 1-6C alkyl or optionally substituted benzyl, or phenylethyl; and Z = functional group which can react with secondary amine function to form N-C bonds; to form a compound (D); (b) condensing (D) on the silanol sites of a silica gel to form an immobilized polyazacycloalkane of formula (E) X'2 = X2 or O-silica gel; and X'3 = X3 or O-silica gel; and (c) if required, protecting some silanol sites which have not reacted by Z'. An Independent claims are also included for compounds of type (D) and similar.
