PURPOSE: A fabrication method of a metal matrix composite is provided to furthermore improve mechanical characteristics of the metal matrix composite by adding pre-strain to shape memory alloys used as a reinforcing agent, thereby generating compression residual stress in a matrix metal. CONSTITUTION: In a method for manufacturing a metal matrix composite in which mechanical characteristics of a matrix metal are reinforced by a reinforcing agent, the fabrication method of the metal matrix composite using shape memory alloys as the reinforcing agent comprises the steps of machining the metal matrix composite into a desired shape after fabricating a preform using shape memory alloys as a reinforcing agent and manufacturing the metal matrix composite by penetrating a matrix metal(10) into the preform; rapidly cooling the shape memory heat treated metal matrix composite after shape memory heat treating the machined metal matrix composite; applying pre-strain to the metal matrix composite that is heat treated and then rapidly cooled; and reheating the pre-strained metal matrix composite, wherein the matrix metal(10) is a metal comprising aluminum and magnesium having a melting point of 700 deg.C or less, the shape memory heat treatment is performed by maintaining the heated metal matrix composite for a certain period of time after heating the machined metal matrix composite to a certain temperature within the shape memory temperature range, a pre-strain amount during pre-strain of the metal matrix composite is within a strain amount range in which the shape memory alloys maintain superelasticity, and a reheating temperature of the metal matrix composite is a transformation temperature for martensitic phase(30)/austenitic phase(20) of the shape memory alloys or more.
