PURPOSE: A method for controlling a state timer of a MAC(Medium Access Control) layer in an IS-2000 system is provided, which enables an efficient state control by reducing a dedicated channel usage efficiency of packet data transport users in a base station and also improves a capacity of the system. CONSTITUTION: According to the method, if there is packet data to transport by a random user, it is transited to an active state(S100) and then it is checked whether there is a packet to transport in a buffer(S200). If there is a packet to transport in the buffer, the packet is transported(S300), and otherwise, an active state timer value while performing an initial timer operation mode is calculated(S400). The timer is set according to the calculated initial active state timer value(S500). A buffer state is checked continuously after setting the timer, and the expiration of the timer is checked if there is no packet to transport in the buffer(S700). If the timer is expired, an active state timer value is calculated(S800). The initial active state timer value is subtracted from the above active state timer value, and the result value is compared with a preestablished value to control the state transition. If the result value is larger than the preestablished value, the timer is reset with the calculated active state timer value(S900), and if the result value is smaller than the preestablished value, the state transition is performed in a control sustain state(S1000).
