FIELD: analytical methods. SUBSTANCE: when determining ammonium ions in aqueous media, for instance in milk, juice-containing drinks, juices, in any soft drinks, spirits, and waste waters, in any other substances forming ammonia or ammonium salts under corresponding conditions, such as proteins, amino acids, nitrogen bases, and urea, to extend spectrum of determinable compounds and method application area. Method consists in getting ready a sample, adding indicator and alkali solution of an oxidant to the sample, performing photometric measurement, and evaluating concentration of ammonium ion from data thus obtained. Oxidant is an organic compound selected from the group of organic compounds capable of taking part in free-radical reactions in alkaline media, and indicator is a compound from the group of aromatics containing at least one hydroxy group in molecule.
