The method involves operating the engine as a full engine or with cylinders switched off, whereby the cylinders operated in sequence in full engine mode are divided into two groups of cylinders that can be switched off for the alternative mode. A group of associated cylinders is operated with double the ignition interval when operated in the mode with cylinders switched off, in which the group of cylinders are ignited alternately.
