The method involves injecting the fuel in all cylinders in an operating mode of the internal combustion engine, where no fuel is injected in the former cylinder and fuel is injected in the latter cylinder in another operating mode of the internal combustion engine. The ignition sparks are released in the former cylinder at defined time intervals in the latter operating mode, and high leakage (62,63) of an injection valve of the former cylinder is detected when one of the ignition sparks triggers the combustion process in the former cylinder. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing the method; (2) a computer program product for executing the method; and (3) a control device for operating an internal combustion engine.
