The method (1) involves stopping injection of fuel in inlet lines of cylinders of a spark ignition internal combustion engine while continuing actuation of spark plugs according to an extinction request of the engine by a driver of a vehicle. Time interval separating a passage by an upper dead center of one of the cylinders of the engine is measured (6) after the last fuel injection (5) and when the instantaneous rate of the engine falls below a predefined threshold of the rotational speed. An independent claim is also included for a spark ignition internal combustion engine comprising an electronic control unit.
