The piston has a steel base (1) with a combustion mould (2). The surface facing the cylinder head or the combustion mould has a coating formed by thermal spraying. The coating may be of NiCrAl alloy, CoCrAl alloy, a mixture of these alloys or a FeCrAl alloy. The thickest part of the coating is at the mould edge (5). The coating thickness on the piston base decreases radially outwards and into the combustion mould to the mould base.
