Oxygen partial pressure of a gaseous atmosphere is measured at known temperature. This is related mathematically to the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure, of a mixture of a metal and one or more of its oxide forms, at the same temperature. A constant value ratio results, when the oxygen pressure measured in the gas atmosphere is the same as the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure of the mixture of metal and metal oxide.
