The transmitter (4) emits directed high energy electromagnetic radiation (8) through the focusing unit (17) into the heterogeneous material mixture (2) comprising carrier material (15) and objects to be isolated. The mixture temperature is raised. The transmitter is switched off and the electromagnetic radiation returns are measured. A receiver (5) with focusing unit (16) detects them in terms of time and location. Data is evaluated (6) to determine mixture composition and location of objects. The surface is swept to find the objects, e.g. mines in the earth and/or structures. An Independent claim is included for corresponding apparatus.
