A CPU (28) displays an arrow on a screen (12) indicating the position of the device relative to the target position and the distance of the device to the target position, based on the input target position, geographical position of the device determined by GPS unit (14) and alignment of the device relative to the known geographical direction. An independent claim is also included for machine readable data medium storing navigation program used in portable navigation device.
