The magnetic bearing (3, 5) is controlled. It includes a permanent magnet (3) on the component (2) moving relative to the stator (5). Magnetic force between permanent magnet and stator is designed to hold the moving component in the working position, with zero control current. Only on departure from the working position is a control current applied. This magnetizes the stator in a direction tending to restore the working position.
