New nucleic acid for the barley homeobox gene JuBel2, useful for altering phenotype of plants, e.g. increased branching for improved crop yields

DNA (I) representing the homeobox gene JuBel2 of barley (Hordeum vulgare) is: (i) a cDNA sequence of 2131 bp S1 or 2141 bp S4; (ii) a genomic sequence of 9720 bp S3 or; (iii) a molecule with the same or similar sequence and at least 75% sequence similarity with S1, S3 or S4. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) nucleic acid molecule (Ia), including genes, that encode barley JuBel2 gene products of 608 amino acids S2 or 611 aa S5, or sequences with at least 75% sequence similarity with them; (2) fragments of (I) or (Ia); (3) nucleic acid (Ib) complementary to (I), (Ia) and their fragments; (4) nucleic acid (Ic) that hybridize to (Ib); (5) nucleic acid (Id) containing a sequence that is sense or antisense with respect to (I), (Ia) or their fragments; (6) constructs containing any of the new nucleic acids; (7) protein or polypeptide (II) encoded the new nucleic acids, and fragments of (II); (8) (fusion) protein or polypeptide (IIa) that contains (II) or its fragment; (9) antibodies that bind specifically to (II) or (IIa); (10) organisms showing ectopic expression of a JuBel2 gene; (11) transgenic organism that contains the new nucleic acids or constructs, or their functional analogs; and (12) organisms, especially plants, in which the wild-type JuBel2 gene is modified so that no functional gene product is expressed.
