A data transmission device based on at least four radio appliances (70-100) of which at least two are formed into spatially successive radio cells (150,160) in the direction of travel and in each of the at least two radio cells (150,160) in each case one radio appliance functions as a master unit (70,85,100) and at least one functions as a slave unit (75,80,90,95). A slave radio appliance communicates exclusively with the master unit, the latter communicating with all the slave units as well additionally with the nearest master unit in the direction of the leading car as well as with the nearest master unit in the opposite direction. Each of the radio appliances has two radio modules, one a master module (M'') for driving the radio appliance as a 'master' device (M) and the other a slave module (S'), for driving the radio appliance as a 'slave' device (S).
