An assembly to treat aquarium water discharge (10) employs micro-organisms in an elongated upright reactor container (30) having inlets (13,23) for air or oxygen (20) and water (10), where the reactor (30) chamber is partly filled with solid bodies (40) acting as a substrate for a colony of micro-organisms, and the column is sub-divided into three or more zones. An Independent claim is also included for a process in which the solid bodies are made of quartz, ceramics, clay, swelling clay, glass, synthetic polymers, vulcanized bodies or a mixture of these.
