The invention relates to a method and also to a bioreactor for carrying out the method, comprising a gassing device which is designed as an airlift shaft overflow. The bioreactor is suitable for anaerobic, aerobic and microaerophilic fermentation processes. The aeration device preferably works self-priming and also enables gas recycling through circulation, with the necessary gas supply being decoupled from the gassing intensity and the energy input, which means that the bioreactor is also suitable for the use of gaseous substrates.
