An electrochemical capacitor comprises a single cell or a stack of single cells. Each single cell has an electrode (10) made from a nano-structured film in which nano-structured discrete needle-like elements are electrically anchored on one surface, a counter electrode (20) made from electrically conductive or semiconducting material, and an electrolyte (13) formed as a thin film electrolyte covering the electrode in layers to reduced contact between the electrode and counter electrode. The needle-like elements are embedded in the counter electrode. An Independent claim is also included for the production of an electrochemical capacitor comprising applying a electrode layer onto a nano-structured electrode by immersion coating; and filling the intermediate chambers between the nano-structured discrete needle-like elements of the electrode to produce a counter electrode. Preferred Features: The layer thickness of the electrolyte is not more than 1, especially not more than 50 nm. The electrolyte is a gel-like ion conductor or a solid body ion conducting material.
