The digital amplifier (3), particularly a power amplifier for audio signals, has a control device (1) for generating a pulse width modulated control signal for controlling the amplifier in dependence on an input signal. The control device generates a PWM signal whose individual pulses have a temporally irregular distribution. The width of the pulses may be dependent on the temporal distribution. Independent claims also cover a method of operation of the amplifier.
