Phase transfer catalysts and solvents containing little or no water are used in a method for the production of polythiophenes by reacting 3,4-alkylenedioxy-thiophenes with sulfonic acid compounds and oxidising agents. A method for the production of polythiophenes involves reacting (a) thiophenes of formula (I), in which R1 = optionally substituted 1-10C alkyl residue; R, R2 = H, 1-20C alkyl, OH, -OCH2CH2CH2SO3H or 1-18C alkoxy with (b) compounds with one or more sulfonic acid groups, (c) oxidising agent(s), (d) phase-transfer catalyst(s) and optionally (e) catalyst(s) at 0-150 deg C in solvent(s) containing little or no water and then working up the reaction mixture. An Independent claim is also included for polythiophenes obtained by this method, in the form of solids, dispersions or solutions.
