Novel nucleic acid (I) comprises (i) a 4047 bp sequence (1), reproduced, or AAF59156; (ii) a segment with at least 14 bp from (i); (iii) a sequence that hybridizes to (i) or (ii) at 37-50 deg C; (iv) a sequence at least 60% identical with (i) or (ii); (v) a complement of (i)-(iv), or (vi) an equivalent of (i)-(iv) within the degeneracy of the genetic code. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) vector containing (I); (B) host cell containing (I) or the vector of (a); (C) polypeptide (II) that (i) is isolated from Myzus persicae, (ii) has a 2348 amino acid sequence (2), reproduced, (iii) is encoded by AFF59156, (iv) is a fragment of (ii) or (iii) having ACCase (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) activity or (v) is at least 60% identical with (i)-(iv); (D) recombinant production of (II) by growing cells of (b); (E) antibody (Ab) specifically reactive with (II); (F) method (F) for identifying compounds that bind to insect polypeptides having ACCase activity; (G) method (G) for identifying compounds that modulate activity of insect and/or acarina ACCase; (H) method (H) for identifying compounds that alter expression of insect polypeptides having ACCase activity; and (I) modulators of ACCase, insecticides and/or acaricides identified by methods (f) or (g).
