Preparation of enantiomer-enriched N-acylated beta -amino-acids (I) by enantioselective catalytic hydrogenation of prochiral N-acetylated Z- beta -aminoacrylic acids (II) in polar solvent is carried out in the presence of a bis(diorganylphosphino)-alkane, -cycloalkane or -heterocycloalkane compound (III). Preparation of enantiomer-enriched N-acylated beta -amino-acids (I) by enantioselective catalytic hydrogenation of prochiral N-acetylated Z- beta -aminoacrylic acids (II) in polar solvent is carried out in the presence of a bis(diorganylphosphino)-alkane, -cycloalkane or -heterocycloalkane compound of formula (III). R1, R2, F3, R4 = 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkoxyalkyl, 6-18C aryl, 7-19C aralkyl, 3-18C heteroaryl, 4-19C heteroaralkyl, 1-6C alkyl-(6-18C)-aryl, 1-8C alkyl-(3-18C)-heteroaryl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 1-8C alkyl-(3-8C)-cycloalkyl or 3-8C cycloalkyl-(1-8C)-alkyl; A = 2-5C alkylene bridge or 1,2- or 1,3-(3-8C)-cycloalkylene bridge, which may contain double bond(s), substituent(s) selected from 1-8C alkyl, 1-8C acyl, 1-8C alkoxy, 2-8C alkoxyalkyl, 6-18C aryl and 3-6C cycloalkyl and/or heteroatoms, e.g. nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), phosphorus (P) or sulfur (S) in the ring; A is not 2,2'-(1,1'-binaphthylene).
