Amino acid dehydrogenases are useful for preparation of L- orD-a-amino acids from the corresponding a-keto acids. Thereactions require NH3, NAD(P)H and a second enzyme,usually formate or glucose dehydrogenase, for regeneration ofthe NAD(P)H. The enzymes are effective at high substrateconcentrations and have very high enantioselectivity.Examples of the use of amino acid dehydrogenases for thepreparation of some chiral intermediates used for the synthesisof drug candidate compounds are described.
