Preparation of halogenated 1,2-disilaethanes, which are 1,2-bis(mono-, di- or tri-halo-silyl)ethanes (I), comprises reacting corresponding halogenated 1,2-disilaethenes (II) with hydrogen in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst. Preparation of halogenated 1,2-disilaethanes, which are 1,2-bis(mono-, di- or tri-halo-silyl)ethanes of formula (I), comprises reacting corresponding halogenated 1,2-disilaethenes of formula (II) with hydrogen in the presence of hydrogenation catalyst. X3-nRnSi-CHR1CHR1-SiRnX3-n (I) X3-nRnSi-CR1=CR1-SiRnX3-n (II) R, R1 = hydrogen (H) or monovalent (substituted) 1-40 carbon (C) hydrocarbyl; X = halogen; and n = 0, 1 or 2.
