A transmitter/receiver unit receives an echo of a scanning signal returned from the material being measured. The transmitter/receiver unit is fixed to a carrier by a fixing member. At least actuator is provided for moving the transmitter/receiver unit relative to the fixing member. The unit may be rotated, displaced or pivoted by the actuator. A control unit determines the quality of the echo signal received at a predetermined position and controls the actuator to change the position if the quality is determined to be poor. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a level measuring device (b) a level measuring method.
