Bicomponent injection molding method with twin die includes injecting support material into first mold cavity followed by injecting foamed thermoplastic into second cavity
A composite component is produced by injection molding a support element (15) in a first mold cavity. The tool is opened and the element (15) is transferred into a second mold cavity where a second component (18) comprising a thermoplastic with a blowing agent is injected. The mold space is expanded to allow the foamed component to form. The mold is opened and the cycle repeated. An independent claim is also included for a molding tool containing two mold cavities with separate injection ducts (20). One of the cavities has a movable insert (22) so that the cavity can be extended to allow expansion to take place. Alternatively arrangements can be provided to partially open the mold to provide expansion space. Preferred Features: Prior to the second stage a decorative material (19), e.g. leather, film or fabric, is placed in the second mold cavity to form an outer surface. Transfer between the mold cavities can be performed manually or by an automatic handling device.
