Production of nano-scale zinc silicate doped with Mn2+ comprises: (1) preparation of a precursor by reaction of an aqueous/alcoholic solution containing zinc compound, manganese compound, redundant and tetraethoxysilane with a base; and (2) hydrothermally crystallizing the precursor produced at temperatures of up to 300 deg C. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of yttrium silicate doped with europium, terbium, cerium or samarium comprising: (1) preparation of a precursor by reacting an aqueous or aqueous/alcoholic solution containing an yttrium compound, a compound of the dopant and tetraethoxysilane with a base; and (2) hydrothermally crystallizing the precursor produced at temperatures up to 500 deg C or thermally crystallizing at temperatures from 950 deg C.
