Preparing a supported catalyst based on metal particles, comprises (a) providing an aqueous solution of at least one metal precursor at a first temperature, (b) heating a porous support at a second temperature that is greater than the first temperature, (c) contacting the aqueous solution with the porous support by dry impregnation, (d) drying the product, (e) optionally calcining the product, and (f) reducing the product. Independent claims are included for: (1) process for selective hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to 1-6C-alcohol, methanol or dimethyl-ether, comprising contacting a hydrocarbon filler comprising at least one polyunsaturated compound in the presence of hydrogen with the supported catalyst, where the hydrocarbon filler consists of catalytic cracking fraction, steam cracking C2 fraction, steam cracking C3 fraction, steam cracking C4 fraction, steam cracking C5 fraction and steam cracking gasolines; and (2) isomerizing, hydroisomerizing or hydrogenolysis of hydrocarbon compound comprising contacting the hydrocarbon filler with the supported catalyst in the presence of hydrogen.
